The materials in the Womens History Initiative (WHI) provide a unique window on the relationship between women and technology. WHI is a cross-disciplinary, national initiative launched by the Library of Congress in 2006 to collate, digitize, and organize a vast repository of materials relating to women's history for use by educators, scholars, museum curators, and other researchers. WHI's chief purpose is to foster and maintain a stable, well-organized, and searchable digital repository of materials relevant to women of the United States. In fiscal year 2006, the WHI entered its fifth year of operation at the library. During its first three years, WHI digitized more than 8,000 items, including 140,000 images, which helped move the project well beyond books and instead now offers a vast resource for the study of women's history.
Finding our way through the vast amount of information now available on American women's history remains a work in progress, but the WHI exemplifies how the copious holdings on women's history, including hitherto unknown and largely unpublished material, can contribute to scholars' understanding of American history. If I were to walk into the Library of Congress today, I would be able to identify and track the trails of women's role in civil society, in government, in business, in religion and everyday life. Such information, which before was reserved for the private or personal files of individuals, is now available for viewing online by any researcher looking for context or information about a female ancestor. These are judgments callow youth can only assume.
By Henry Adams, published in 1920, the great American historian refers to the "economic" in history, and this may be one of the reasons why Anna to him is "a rather uninspiring figure." Her life is good and her period is glorious, but she does not have the ambiance to match Adams's epic description of the French Revolution, and that goes for every heroine. Her hero is a man: there is a man who fails, and then comes down to his wife's side. This is patriarchy pure as Adams saw it to be. d2c66b5586
