In early 1958 the user service and support organization at IBM, then called the Service Bureau Corporation, announced a new disk storage service for IBM mainframe customers with which IBM would provide computers hard-wired for disk storage, call the Drive Control Module, or DCM.
The DCM included a disk storage device; an interface, called the DCI, for direct replacement of punched paper tape by a device called the Control Unit or CU, which converted punched tape to FORTRAN Tape Listing Format (TLIF) formatted to a stream of bits that were transferred via the interface over a RS-232 serial link to the computer controller. IBM engineers realized that a block of bits could be compressed and usually about a factor of two more compressed than the original data were possible, resulting in a substantial saving in spooling costs, allowing more than one file to be kept on a single spool, and allowing the size of a spool to be reduced from eight inches to less than one inch.
In a nearly identical announcement three months apart on June 9, 1958, IBM engineers announced the drive control software for the IBM 350 and IBM 355 disk storage. There were two disks, 36 tracks each in 16 rows, with 14 tracks on the 350 and 20 tracks on the 355. The disk was mounted at an angle with its diameter facing the head so that it could be read and written at a radius of a few thousandths of an inch.
By late 1958 IBM engineers were ready to publicize what they had done: 10X compression of hard disk data in the IBM 350 disk storage on the IBM 700 and other computers; 75% savings in cost, and; ease of switching to disk storage from punched tape; 10X-15X more instructions per bit were possible, and space saved by compression could be used for more central processing power.
