Upon selecting a mercenary, the player is given a brief mission briefing which includes an overview of the faction, its objectives and how to advance the game. The player can also select the type of weapon they wish to use, with the possible exceptions of mortars and armor piercing rounds. Weapons are divided into Assault (aimed) and Support (area) class. The classifications are similar to those seen in Call of Duty. The player may also choose to avoid the two types of fire missions which are set up by the Mercenary Council. The Assault class has generally better stats compared to the Support class, though both are effective at their class. The player may also select an item from a list of purchasable items, such as a rifle scope or grenade launcher, though the effectiveness of the item usually varies according to the situation.
Returning from the first game, the player now starts off with a base, but this time the base has four distinct parts: a base, a mission center, a safe house, and a vehicle garage. The mission center is where the player gets missions, the safe house is a safe place to sleep, buy upgrades, and change clothes. The vehicle garage is a place where the player may buy vehicles (except for the one vehicle which is given by the Allied Nations, the helicopter. A helicopter mission is taken at the beginning of the game, when the player is introduced to helicopter pilot and mercenary, Miho. When a mission is taken, the mission is shown on screen along with the player's mission objectives, the target of the mission, and the type of mission. The player must start a mission with several lives, but if these are all lost, the mission is considered a failure. The player may fail a mission by being killed, or by not completing the objectives, both of which result in losing money and lives. The player has to make choices throughout the game regarding which missions to take and the order in which to take them. If the player does not complete a mission and proceed to the next mission, it will be as though they failed the mission and the money and lives will be lost. Successful missions are rewarded with money, experience, and weapons. If the player has enough experience points, they gain access to two more levels in their level up system, resulting in a maximum of five levels. At the end of each level up system, the player has to choose between advanced weapon or advanced armor.
The game's soundtrack is composed by Daft Punk, Tyga, Yung Berg, Mark Mill and Sonny Digital. The soundtrack was first available for purchase on iTunes in 2009. The CD, titled The Best of Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction Original Game Music, was released the following year.
