Along with the film, there are many academic papers which have been written to enhance the understanding and analysis of the issue. Some of these articles and monographs discuss the question of conversion in South Asia, the impact of the Partition, and the role of religion in inter-religious relations. In addition to these academic resources, some books on the assassination and the ideology of the assassin has been written. While the film is largely fictional, it does attempt to tell a coherent and compelling story of the assassination and the inner life of the murderer. The film is a fictional narrative set in the nine hours in the life of Nathuram Godse (Horst Buchholz) that led up to his assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (J.S. Casshyap). As he prepares for the shooting at Gandhi's residence, flashbacks recall Godse's hostility to Muslims during the Partition, his adherence to Hindu Mahasabha that hatches the plot to kill Gandhi, and his involvement with a married woman Rani (Valerie Gearon) and a prostitute Sheila (Diane Baker). Meanwhile, a police officer Supt. Gopal Das (Jose Ferrer) attempts to find the killer before it is too late.[4]

It is never easy to make a film about so many historical characters, but this fascinating story about one of the century's biggest tragedies provides a lot of interesting characters and scenes that showcase history at its best. Though I could have done without all the background info and some of the characters, I could not help but find this film captivating from the beginning and it took me about 2 hours to watch it. 827ec27edc
