What does it mean for an act to be right? It means, Nagel claims, that it is not a mistake to judge an act right. It means that it is not simply a mistake to judge that an act was right. Of course, it is a mistake to think that an act is right. To think that an act is right is to judge that it is right, and to judge it right is to think that it is right. This is not a trivial point, for it is one that Nagel asserts. He distinguishes between the judgment that the rightness of an act is important to one and a mistake that it is right.
The second part of the book is concerned with applied ethics. Nagel claims that his analysis of right and wrong is not a statement of a particular ethical theory; rather, it is an analysis of what it is to act right or wrong, or, more properly, an analysis of why one should act right or wrong, what gives one or another action the right sort of moral status. What gives a right action its status as such? Nagel argues that it is both recognition, and agreement. To say that an action was right is to say that it makes sense, that it is intelligible, both objectively and subjectively. To judge it right is also to take a standpoint, to recognize that one has an interest in the action's being right, but also to recognize that it is good for the agent to have this as an end. To judge that an act was right, then, is to think of it as something that makes sense, that is intelligible, both objectively and subjectively.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
